One of the things that I remember most vividly from the second semester of my freshman year survey of the ancient Mediterranean was the art history day on the Ara Pacis. The Ara Pacis was lost for years until it was pulled out of a bog. It provides a reminder that Rome used to be a boggy landscape before it was drained and built. I found a large selection of pictures and diagrams on
AWOL.
The Ara Pacis is amazing.
